Cerimonia del Cultural Day

World Culture Day - UGANDA-2010

Minister’s Statment

“Culture Counts”

the World Culture Day is one of the advocacy days the minister celebrates to advance various causes. This time round, we want to share with you the potential that creative industries have to create employment for the youth. I am glad that the stakeholders in the culture sector have initiated this interesting idea of producing a magazine to commemorate the day.The day is celebrated world wide on 21st of May but this year we chose to celebrate the day in July because we wanted it to be celebrated under the auspices of the African Union Summit and it is my belief that the celebration of the World Culture Day would add a colorful dimension to the African Summit Activities. The theme that will be used to celebrate that day is “Creative Art in Youth Employment: opportunities and Benefits”. The theme was selected to sensitize the public on the importance of creative industries and how they can be used as an avenue for gainful employment. The creative industries are all around us but we have not been adequately sensitized about potential to create employment and reduce poverty. This colorful magazine provides on opportunity for you to delve- deeper into what the creative industries are and how they have changed people’s lives for better. The Government of Uganda believes that culture is a key tool in the development of this country. It has put place the necessary environment to support the culture function. On behalf of Government. I wish to express my gratitude to those members Of the civil society and private sector who have invested in culture. I wish to take this opportunity to call upon the youth to take the opportunity that culture presents seriously and in the same vein, I call upon those who have taken up the opportunity from culture to upscale them and employ others as well. You also have the responsibility to educate your peers that gainful employment can accrue from culture. Finally, I call upon all of you to participate in the exhibition and performances that will make up the celebrations so that you can take the message back home that culture counts. Minister
