Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, said yesterday he would be «delighted» if Saddam Hussein fled Iraq and indicated that America was willing to contemplate an immunity deal. As Britain prepared to announce the deployment of armoured forces to the Gulf, and large anti-war protests were held in Washington and other cities across the world, Mr Rumsfeld suggested that Saddam could avert the war by leaving the country. «To avoid a war, I would, personally, recommend that some provision be made so that the senior leadership and their families could be provided haven in some other country», he said. ...
